Drones are unpiloted aircrafts or spacecrafts which are either operated by humans with a remote control, or use computer technology and sensors to move on their own. They vary in size and can be as small as your hand or as large as an aeroplane - and can fly long distances and to high altitudes. Drones are used in many different ways - from taking photos, to delivering parcels and even assisting in emergency rescues. They’re often able to complete tasks more quickly than humans and can tackle jobs which may be too dangerous for us.&nbsp; In this animation, Katie and Tex focus on how drones are being used for environmental sustainability. Drones are powered by electricity and don’t directly emit fumes into the atmosphere. While many only have relatively short flying times before needing to be recharged, they tend to offer a more sustainable form of transport for short deliveries than vehicles such as vans and planes. Drones can also help protect the environment and animals - from planting new trees by dropping seed pods from the air, to tracking endangered animals.&nbsp; <h3>The challenge</h3>Katie asks children to think about how drones could help people in their daily lives. Perhaps you can ask your students or children to create an image of their drone in action and label it to explain how it works and what it’s doing.&nbsp;We’d love to see what they come up with! As cashless payment technology continues to advance, we’re increasingly able to buy things digitally, using smart devices such as phones and watches, without the need for traditional banknotes and coins. However, the way we now make purchases, with just a simple tap of a card or device, can be confusing for children who don’t see any cash being exchanged. It’s therefore important to remind children that cashless payments still involve transferring money to the company or person being paid, as we explain in this animation. <h3>The challenge</h3>If you’d like to explore this topic further with your students or children, take a look at this <a href="https://natwest.mymoneysense.com/parents/worksheets-activities/name-the-digital-payments/">activity sheet for 5-8 year-olds</a> from NatWest MoneySense, with whom we partnered on this animation. In simple terms, a robot is any automatically operated machine that replaces human effort. Robots come in all shapes and sizes - sometimes they look like humans and sometimes they don’t! Robots perform many different tasks and can often do these faster and with more accuracy than a human. Robots can be guided externally by a separate device or they might have controls embedded within them. Most robots are now using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. AI refers to a machine's ability to think, learn and adapt to different situations like a human. It’s already used in many areas of our lives such as personal assistants - like Alexa and Siri - in autonomous cars, and to track our online shopping habits.&nbsp; Robots combined with AI are known as ‘AI robots’. AI robots - such as our character, Tex - learn to perform their tasks as a result of humans coding and programming them. They then use ‘machine learning’ to adapt and change what they do to get better at it. AI robots are currently used in places like hospitals, restaurants, manufacturing and recycling.&nbsp; There are often fears that robots will take over people’s jobs in the future. While this may be true for certain jobs, robotics will also create new jobs and free up time for people to work on more ‘value-add’ activities by making time-consuming processes more efficient. Automation and robotics will continue to advance in the years ahead so it’s important for children to understand the need for people to work in technology to design, create and control the robotics technology of the future.&nbsp;<h3>The challenge</h3>In the animation, Katie asks children to have a go at designing their own robot - especially one which can help others in some way. Autonomous shops are shops without any checkouts. Customers walk in, pick up the items they’d like to buy and simply walk out. An app on the customer’s phone, along with special sensors placed all around the store, detect what the customer picks up from the shelves and also if they put something back again. When the customer leaves the store, the app calculates the total price of the products they’ve collected, sends them a notification and then charges their bank. There are therefore no queues and no checkouts in the shop. Some companies call this technology ‘WiWo’ which stands for ‘Walk in. Walk Out’. Autonomous shops already exist in the UK and the adoption of this type of shopping experience is set to grow in the coming years.&nbsp;<h3>The challenge</h3>Here’s a follow-up creative challenge you can set for children to complete after watching the animation on autonomous shopping:&nbsp;Next time you’re out shopping, what technology can you see in shops and how is it used? We’d like you to create a poster, drawing pictures of the technology you see in shops and explaining what it does (ask an adult if you spot something and are unsure what it's used for).&nbsp;For an extra challenge, you could even think about what kinds of technology might replace this in the future. Virtual reality (VR) is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. Instead of the user viewing something via a screen in front of them, they put on a VR headset and are immersed in an interactive 3D world.&nbsp;Virtual reality experiences have a wide range of uses from entertainment, to education, architecture, healthcare and more. Currently, VR experiences rely on the use of two of our five senses - sight and sound. However, this area of technology is advancing rapidly and likely to play a significant role in children’s future careers and personal lives.&nbsp;<h3>The challenge</h3>In the animation, Katie asks viewers to imagine being a VR designer and create an image of a world they’d like to explore using a VR headset. With <a href="https://www.internationalwomensday.com/">International Women's Day 2022</a> approaching on 8 March, we’ve put together two short videos to help explain the importance of this day to children. Our Head of Early Education, Becky Patel, highlights what International Women’s Day is all about and why it’s important for both boys and girls. Becky also explains some of the inequalities that exist between women and men - and shares some of things children can do to help make the world a fairer place.Whether you’re a teacher, parent, or guardian, we hope you find these videos useful. Since the COP26 climate summit earlier this month, topics such as sustainable living and protecting the future of our planet have dominated the news agenda, as well as entering our everyday conversations, including those taking place in schools and among young people. Today, we’re delighted to announce the release of our latest free on-demand Tech We Can lesson, ‘Tech for the Planet’. Aimed at children aged 8-14, this lesson aims to show some of the innovative ways in which technologists around the world are using technology to protect our air, reduce waste, help clean the oceans and preserve our wildlife. It also highlights some of the role models working in these areas which we hope will inspire young viewers to consider a future career in technology. Many thanks to Lucinda Jones from Unilever and Mikya Rozner from Tesco for featuring in this lesson and sharing what their roles involve. You can watch the lesson, taught by Becky Patel and Katie King in our new studio, below. On 28 September 2021, we got together with our members, trustees and guest speakers to celebrate Tech She Can becoming an independent charity, committed to improving the ratio of women working in technology roles.With an opening speech from one of our original founding members, Sandy Lacey-Aberdein, Head of Talent at Zoopla who kindly hosted the event, we went on to hear from our CEOs about future ambitions for Tech She Can. Our <a href="https://www.techshecan.org/about-us#trustees">trustees</a> took part in a panel session sharing stories about the challenges they face in relation to diversity within their own organisations, as well as the importance of visible role models, and how, by working together, we can make a real difference to improving the gender balance in tech. We were also delighted to have Priya Guha MBE join us as our keynote speaker. Priya highlighted how critical it is for women to participate in the design and development of technology if we're to solve today's biggest societal problems.You can hear more about our journey so far and how we're looking forward to working with our members to extend our impact even further in this short video, filmed at the launch event. Now, as a woman in tech, a returner and a mum, I see first-hand the urgent need to inspire our next generation when they ask ‘what can I be when I grow up?’, to equip their schools and parents with the technology literacy they need to be able to make those routes a reality, and to value and retain our female talent, against the odds.”<h2>Tech We Can now reaches 630 schools</h2>In 2019, Tech She Can launched an online portal - called <a href="/tech-we-can/">Tech We Can</a> - following two successful pilots with schools across the UK. The online portal provides lesson plans for teachers which can be taught to girls and boys aged 9-14, with the aim of inspiring school students across the country to consider a career in technology, and boost the diversity of future technologists. The lesson plans are designed for teachers to adapt based on the technologies available at each participating school and showcase the breadth and depth of tech careers and highlight real life role models, especially females, from across the Tech She Can signatories. Tech We Can now reaches 630 schools across the UK.&nbsp;During the pandemic, Tech We Can at Home was launched giving parents and carers access to lesson plans and a series of shorter online sessions, ‘Tech Tuesdays’ were run for 10 consecutive weeks, designed to be viewed on demand in the classroom or at home. There have now been over 1,300 home users of the lesson plans and over 7,500 total views of the Tech Tuesdays. Students and homeschoolers have taken part across the globe from the UK to Australia, Greece, India, Nigeria, South Africa, Thailand, the USA and Qatar.&nbsp;<h2>New initiatives</h2>Tech She Can piloted its very first apprenticeship scheme during the pandemic when Zoopla took onboard 10 trainee software engineers who participated in a 10 week virtual bootcamp. Findings from the boot camp were also used to help Centrica increase their share of female engineering apprentices to 40%. More recently, PwC, Zoopla, Credit Suisse and Morgan Stanley joined up to deliver Tech She Can’s first ‘Career Insight Programme’ for Year 11 students to find out how technology is used, the types of tech careers that exist, and meet role models from these organisations. The charity is looking to scale these initiatives with apprenticeships, career insights, and work experience weeks becoming a core part of its strategy.Tech We Can Champions is a newer initiative which allows the employees of the member organisations to receive training in order to give back to their local schools and communities.<h2>Partnerships helping give Tech She Can a greater impact</h2>With the UK facing a critical technology skills shortage, Tech She Can has formed joint initiatives with a number of key partners including the DCMS and the Digital Skills Partnership, Future Dot Now, STEM learning, and Tech Talent Charter. In addition, Tech She Can has sponsored the establishment and participation in an All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPG) on Diversity &amp; Inclusion in STEM with the British Science Association.<h2>Digital Secretary Nadine Dorries said:</h2>“I welcome the work being done by Tech She Can to help the next generation of women and girls to pursue careers in technology .&nbsp;"Helping a broader range of people get the skills they need to work in technology is not only the right thing to do, but also makes good business sense."I am delighted that Tech She Can's new charity status will help its efforts to boost diversity in the sector."<h2>Siân Allsopp, Technology Executive Director, Morgan Stanley said:</h2>“I consider myself to be an accidental technologist, because the importance of technology and the opportunities it opens up were not clear to me or my peers as we made our academic choices at school.&nbsp;“Decades on, technology is crucial for our society; from fashion design and social media influencers to medicine and investment banking, technology is shaping our lives and progressing our economies.
